To the Editor:
I wish to convey my heartfelt gratitude to Rob Benson, Victor Stanley and Joe Cistone for their “Keep Families Together” reflections in the Community Forum in last week’s Islander.
While we must all stand up as human beings who value, without exception, all other human persons, particularly the vulnerable, it is both encouraging and appropriate when faith leaders do not equivocate on an issue that desperately needs our focused response.
We are only truly human when compassion and care guide us in our positions and policies.
As was stated in the article, “we are all called to care for those who have been compelled to seek sanctuary at our door.”
Let us live up to Lady Liberty’s summons, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…”
Please stop forced separations, and for-profit warehousing of desperate human beings. If we do not speak out against these inhuman actions, who will?
Our own souls, and the soul of our nation, depend on it.
