Thanks to several wonderful articles in the Mount Desert Islander, many people know that Christopher Heel created the 1st Annual Autism Awareness Walk as part of his Senior Exhibition project at MDI High School in 2014.
That event was a success and raised more than $3,000 for the Autism Society of Maine. He immediately began planning this year’s event and added a 5K run in addition to the walk with the goal of doubling last year’s total. With an amazing amount of support from businesses and individuals from MDI and surrounding towns, he is close to meeting that goal – donations still can be made.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated in the 2nd Annual Autism Awareness Walk and 5K Run in Northeast Harbor on May 2. See story on the sports page.
We could not have put on such an event without the help of many volunteers and area businesses that stepped up as sponsors.
We would like to thank Dan Stillman of MDI High for his amazing puzzle piece signs and to Marty Lyons of MDI High for helping arrange an awesome group of volunteers. This was truly a community event, and Chris already has begun planning next year’s event. See you there!
