Letter to the Editor: Where the focus should be

To the Editor:

On Sunday, May 31, around 400 people participated in a rally on the Bar Harbor Village Green to demand justice for George Floyd and to stand in solidarity with black people in our community and across the country. I have lived on MDI for over 20 years. Sunday’s event was one of the largest and most racially diverse gatherings I’ve ever been in on this island. It was a remarkable moment for MDI and a remarkable week in our country. We are in the midst of the largest sustained protest in the U.S. in half a century. Tens of thousands of Americans have taken to the streets to demand racial justice and structural change, united by that simple but galvanizing phrase: Black Lives Matter.

How unfortunate that the Islander chose to emphasize in their reporting of this event a lone act of graffiti (totally unrelated to the Sunday rally) and the words of a few white folks who criticized the police. The real news from Sunday was that hundreds of people showed up on the Village Green with two days notice in support of black lives on MDI, Maine and across the U.S. The Islander’s headline badly missed the mark.

A movement is growing across the U.S. that may be the best chance in our generation to bend the arc of our country toward racial justice. That movement is growing here in our community, led by brave and talented youth.

While the Islander struggles to recognize history unfolding here on MDI, the task for the rest of us is to continue to make history. See you next Sunday at 5 p.m. on the Village Green.
