To the Editor:
Our long-standing tradition of open Town Meetings, where voters discuss, debate and vote on local school and town matters and budgets, have had to be different this year because of COVID-19. I hope Southwest Harbor voters will take the time and interest to inform themselves of the issues to be voted on August 11.
Town and school expenditures, which are usually decided by voice vote (or occasionally a written vote), are now all listed individually as Articles 4 through 43 on a referendum by secret ballot. For a more informed vote, I urge Southwest Harbor residents to pick up a 2019 Town Report at the Town Office and request an absentee ballot. This will let you vote at your convenience and avoid standing in line outside the fire station while others vote a much-longer-than-usual ballot.
If you have questions about any article before voting, you can email a member of the Board of Selectmen from the link on the town website www.southwestharbormaine.org or obtain their public phone number through the Town Office. You can contact School Board members through a form on the MDI RSS/AOS 91 website www.mdirss.org/school-boards/board-members-meetings or by phone.
Absentee ballots are due to the Town Clerk by the close of the polls on August 11; if you mail your ballot, be sure to leave plenty of time for it to arrive. If you vote in person, the polls will be open at the fire station from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on August 11. Please VOTE!
