Letter to the Editor: Defeating defeatism is half the battle

To the Editor:

I couldn’t agree more with Russell Wray’s letter to the editor response to Jill Goldthwait’s column, The Harsh Realities of Long Shot Candidacies (Nov. 29). We need not look too far to see the myriad of “long shot candidates” who might never have taken the chance to run had they been faced with only dismissive and defeatist responses to their campaign announcements. But I say we need more, not less, candidates that are willing to accept that challenge and are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to enter a national race. Lisa Savage, who is running for U.S. Senator, has accepted that challenge, and from what I know of her, she has never shied away from struggle and challenges as an activist, organizer and teacher. With the courage of her convictions, integrity and tenacity, she has fought under seemingly insurmountable odds on issues and won. Because her principles are so closely aligned with mine, I made the decision to switch political parties to act on my principles and put my support 100 percent behind Lisa Savage for Senate. The only failure is the failure to try.
