Letter to the Editor: Chambers info in line with guidelines

To the Editor:

I thought it necessary to respond to the letter submitted by Terry Pierson and published in the July 9 edition of the Islander. The letter expressed concerns about information shared by the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce on our website’s Travel Resources FAQ page.

As I shared with the letter’s author prior to publication of the letter, the information we have available on our website is in line with guidance provided by the state of Maine and Governor Janet Mills’ administration. The guidance that I personally posted to our website was prepared upon careful review of the information available in the state’s Keep Maine Healthy plan and that which has been shared by representatives of the Mills administration.

The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce and its members are taking this pandemic extremely seriously. We have partnered with the Town of Bar Harbor to provide educational materials to residents and visitors. I am an active member of the Downeast COVID-19 Task Force, which is providing educational materials and masks for use by frontline hospitality workers. We have created and shared numerous resources for businesses to encourage social distancing, enhanced hygiene measures, and, of course, the need for all of us to wear face coverings in public.

We aim to maintain the health of our community along with the health of our local businesses, which are owned and staffed by our own community members. We all know that the worst possible thing we could do is contribute to an outbreak here in Bar Harbor. The chamber will continue to advocate for our business community while sharing necessary public health education materials to keep us all safe.
