Letter to Editor: Where are the women?

To the Editor:

I write in regards to your “Thank a Police Officer” segment in the September 13 edition of this newspaper.

I couldn’t help but notice that out of the approximately 99 officers working for eight law enforcement agencies in Hancock County, only 3 of the officers appear to be women.

Excluding Ellsworth Police Department and the Maine State Police, six out of the eight agencies (Bar Harbor and Mount Desert, Southwest Harbor, Winter Harbor, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Bucksport, and Gouldsboro) appear to have no women officers at all.

I guess I assumed that law enforcement was a traditionally male dominated field but was genuinely surprised by this level of gender disparity.

I would be interested to know what efforts each agency is undertaking and/or what policies are being implemented to recruit and retain women officers and otherwise increase gender diversity among the ranks. I hope to read some responses from law enforcement agencies on the pages of this paper in the coming weeks.

Thank you in advance.
