To the Editor:
First they came for the brown-skinned children and put them in cages. Why does our government, using our tax dollars, rip children away from their families? Some as young as four months old are then detained and subsequently reclassified as unaccompanied minors.
Why does our government, using our tax dollars, imprison the children in private/for profit detention centers? Why do our tax dollars go to for profit corporations at the rate of $700 per day, per child?
Why does our Justice Department state, in Federal court, that children in our detention camps are not entitled to toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap?
In these for-profit prisons, why are children not adequately cared for? Why are babies and toddlers routinely placed in the care of 10-12 year olds who happen to be held in the same room?
Why are the imprisoned children going without clean drinking water, decent food, blankets, diapers, clean clothes, showers? Why are children sleeping on concrete floors, without mattresses or blankets?
Why are lawyers, translators, medical personnel, social workers or other advocates not allowed access to the camps? Why?
Why is there no accountability or oversight, either for the care the children are receiving or how the $700 per child per day is being spent?
Cruelty is the policy of the Trump administration.
Why isn’t there more of an outcry?
These children are experiencing trauma that they will carry for the rest of their lives.
What would you want for your child?
