Island aid

To the Editor:

When news of the devastation caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in the Caribbean arrived, many Mount Desert Islanders felt a personal connection. From family and staff members who lost their homes to favorite vacation spots blown away, many of us here were heartbroken and wanting to help.

On Oct. 13, 20 Bar Harbor businesses banded together in a fundraising effort for United for Puerto Rico and the Fund for the U.S. Virgin Islands. While every business did something a little different, all pledged to donate a portion of their proceeds from the day to those hurricane relief organizations. Lots of locals came out to make donations and also enjoy food, drink, special sales, a few laughs and even a haircut – all for a good cause!

Reporting is still coming in, but as of Oct. 20, almost $6,000 had been donated!

Thank you to Acadia Stand Up Paddleboarding, Bar Harbor Blues Chocolates, Bar Harbor Hemporium, Bass Cottage Inn, Bistro on Eden, Chart Room Restaurant, Cottage Street Pub, ECHO Salon, Geddy’s, Havana, ImprovAcadia, Mount Desert Ice Cream, Side Street Cafe, The Blue Door, Thirsty Whale Tavern, Peekytoe Provisions, West Street Cafe, Window Panes, YWCA MDI and everyone who contributed for joining us in this effort to support our fellow Americans in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. It’s a real privilege to do business in such a caring and compassionate community!
