To the Editor:
I am extremely dismayed that less than 24 hours after Mainers overwhelmingly cast a historic vote in support of expanding Medicaid to over 70,000 Mainers, Gov. LePage has threatened to do everything in his power to overturn the will of the voters.
Medicaid expansion will help our rural hospital system from drowning in debt and put them on strong financial footing into the foreseeable future. Economic estimates show that Medicaid expansion would create over 6,000 good-paying jobs. Medicaid expansion will help average families like yours and mine get health care coverage so they can afford regular doctor’s visits, necessary preventative care and other health care services every Mainer deserves. LePage’s refusal to expand Medicaid is immoral and unacceptable.
As a Democratic congressional candidate, I am committed to helping down-ballot races across the state to guarantee that whichever Democrat gets elected to the Blaine House next year starts their first term with a strong veto-proof majorities to ensure this voter-backed measure gets implemented as soon as possible. For my part, I will continue advocating for a federal Medicare-for-All program to cover every American citizen so that no man, woman or child in the 2nd district has to worry about a politician’s personal ideology preventing them from receiving the high quality, affordable health care that they deserve.
