Generous community

To the Editor:

On behalf of the senior class and faculty at Mount Desert Island High School, I would like to thank the people who contributed to the success of our recent Senior Seminar on Social Responsibility.

Many in our community gave of their time, talents and resources to show our seniors what it means to be socially responsible.

College of the Atlantic donated their facilities for the day, and Marie Stivers and the staff at College of the Atlantic were most welcoming and helpful in the planning and preparation for the day. Lisa Burton and Chris Vicenty graciously welcomed us to Reel Pizza to watch a movie and enjoy a delicious pizza lunch.

We also are grateful for experts in our community, Linda Robinson, Martha Bucklin, Kip Young, Tim Bland and Jenny Jones, who took time out of their busy schedules to talk with our students about different aspects of individual responsibility.

Our closing speakers, Dennis Kiley and Johannah Blackman, inspired our students with their talk about getting involved in trying to help solve the problems of the world instead of letting them bring us down. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when we examine big issues like climate change, but hearing about movements like A Climate to Thrive reminds us that if we work together, we can move our community, and perhaps even the world, in a more positive direction.

We are fortunate to be a part of such a generous and caring community.
