Firefighter thanks

To the Editor:

We would like to express our profound gratitude to the brave firefighters who responded so quickly to the fire on the afternoon of Friday, May 4, that destroyed our beloved camp, Tranquility, on beautiful Long Pond.

Fortunately, no one was in the cabin. We are equally appreciative that someone saw the smoke and called in the report. Our thanks go to the Mount Desert, Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor and Tremont fire departments, whose prompt and skilled actions ensured that the fire spread no further than our property, and that no one was hurt.

This was particularly difficult given that there is no fire hydrant in the area and water had to be brought to the scene.

Over the 70 years that our family has summered on the island, starting with our father, Benson Ginsburg, who was a summer investigator from the earliest days of The Jackson Lab, we have been impressed with the sense of civic responsibility and neighborliness that Mount Desert Island has in abundance.

We are deeply saddened to lose a place that held so many fond memories but relieved that no more damage was done. We are deeply appreciative of those who are the first to respond to this kind of emergency.
