Energy sanity

To the Editor:

Sen. Susan Collins should be recognized as a proven fighter who has successfully championed readily abundant forms of renewable energy for our state. As the lead sponsor of S. Amendment 3140, Collins led the way on the passage of a bipartisan energy bill that included a key biomass amendment to help ensure that federal policy on forest bioenergy is consistent across all federal departments and agencies. The amendment also would direct these entities to recognize the full benefits of forest biomass for energy, conservation and forest management, both in Maine and across the country.

This wasn’t the first time that Collins took decisive action to support biomass energy. As the lead sponsor of an amendment in the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, Collins has called for the United States to be a world leader in supporting the research and development of clean energy technology such as biomass to address climate change.

Collins has proven to be a leader for Maine committed to placing environmentally sustainable and economically sound biomass policy ahead of politics. Thanks to her tireless work to encourage common sense congressional support for new technologies, important steps have been taken to grow Maine’s economy, slow energy consumption and improve the quality of our air and water.
