To the Editor:
As we all know, housing is tight here on Mount Desert Island, especially during the summer, when housing prices get way high. Wouldn’t it make more sense for those employers who have a large seasonal work force to be required to provide free onsite housing to their seasonal workers if they hire, say, 10 or more of them?
The rooms should be complete with basic bed linens (sheets, pillowcases, a blanket) so local charities would no longer be burdened with helping these temporary workers with them.
This would shift most of the burden where it belongs — the employers who brought the seasonal workers here — instead of the rest of us.
The housing should be onsite, or as close as possible, to lessen the burden of already high seasonal traffic on the rest of us.
