To the Editor:
The front page picture in last week’s Islander, “Trust moves donated house,” tells a wonderful story. A generous donor offered a small cottage to Island Housing Trust, knowing how hard it is for Mount Desert Island employees and their families to find affordable places to live year-round. The house was moved to a small building lot donated by residents of Mount Desert.
Numerous businesses stepped up to prepare the site, connect the utilities and provide professional legal and financial services, all at reduced rates. Bar Harbor Savings and Loan arranged generous loan terms and reduced costs to help make this project possible, as they have done for numerous Island Housing Trust clients over the years.
Community banks are playing an essential role as Island Housing Trust strives to create more housing opportunities on MDI. Banks and employers are well aware of the importance of retaining quality employees and of how a year-round resident population contributes to the local economy, sustains school populations and supplies volunteers that support crucial community services.
On behalf of the board of directors and staff at Island Housing Trust, I thank all the generous and energetic citizens who are contributing to keep MDI vibrant.
