A safer community

To the Editor:

The outpouring of local support for the Mount Desert Island Smoke Detector Campaign has been tremendous. To date, $1,100 has been donated and 55 smoke detectors have been purchased. Dozens of applications for detectors have been received, and with the help of volunteer firefighters across the island, detectors have been installed successfully.

Additionally, extra smoke detectors have been provided to fire departments on the island for distribution to those who need them. If you are in need a smoke detector, please contact your local fire department for assistance.

Thank you most especially to McEachern Hardware in Southwest Harbor for ordering the detectors; the Jesup Memorial Library and the Northeast Harbor Library for collecting donations; the Bar Harbor Fire Department, the Southwest Harbor Fire Department, the Mount Desert Fire Department for technical assistance and installations. In addition to generous donors from across MDI, thanks go to Bobbi Lynn Hutchins of The Blue Door Restaurant for holding a special fundraiser; the Bar Harbor and Westside Food Pantries and Island Connections for collecting applications; and the state of Maine fire marshal for technical assistance.
