William Joseph McEnaney Jr.

William Joseph McEnaney Jr.

Bill McEnaney, 59, of Bellingham, Wash., husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, cousin and friend, passed away on Feb. 16, 2018, at Harbor View Medical Center in Seattle after a brief battle with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a rare and invariably fatal brain disorder that took his life in just six weeks. His wife, Nancy, daughters and other family members were by his side.

Bill was born June 3, 1958, in Rockville Centre, N.Y., the son of Marie and William McEnaney Sr. He grew up in Levittown, N.Y. His parents introduced him to the outdoors at a young age. Their annual summer camping trips throughout the U.S. and Canada sparked Bill’s lifelong passion for the outdoors. The McEnaneys moved to Mount Desert Island in 1976. He graduated from University of Maine in 1981 with a degree in journalism. While there, he was an active member of the Maine Lacrosse Club. In 1984, Bill and his wife, Nancy, were married in Bar Harbor. He went on to a 35-year career in advertising sales and management, working in New York, Maine, Florida and Washington.

Although Bill’s career took him throughout the country, his connection to Maine was central throughout his life. He and Nancy raised their two daughters in the Portland area. After Bill and his family moved out of state, they would return to visit family in southern Maine and Mount Desert Island several times each year.

Bill loved his family more than anything, made friends wherever he went, worked hard and played hard. He lived a fun, active life: camping with his family, skiing, fly fishing, whitewater kayaking, cycling, mountain biking, hiking and sailing. He especially enjoyed skiing in Maine, Washington and Utah with family and friends. Bill was particularly proud of his ascent of Mount Hood in Oregon in 2015. He also enjoyed great music, great beers and fine wines. He was happy, positive, and never held anything back. We can all agree that Bill was “great at life,” and has no regrets. He will be remembered for his welcoming, outgoing manner, great sense of humor, and adventurous spirit.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 33 years, Nancy (nee Wyman) of Bellingham, Wash., daughter Alison Stewart and husband Jameson of Spokane, Wash., daughter Cara McEnaney and granddaughter Layla Brown of Bellingham, Wash., brother John McEnaney and wife, Carol, of Saco, brother Tom McEnaney of Pownal, and brother Patrick McEnaney of Mount Desert. Bill will also be forever remembered by his in-laws Bob and Anne Wyman, Scott Wyman, Mikayla Wyman, nephew Brian McEnaney, cousins, extended family and dear friends. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Marie and William McEnaney of Mount Desert.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 21, at the White Pine Community Church, 94 Cumberland Road, North Yarmouth, ME. Memorial donations can be made in Bill’s name at the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation, cjdfoundation.org/donate.

Know when to pay your respects.
