AUGUSTA — Susan Ashleigh Thatcher, 80, died Saturday, June 3, 2017, at the Togus VA Center Hospice Unit, after a short bout with cancer.
She was born in New York City on Sept. 5, 1936. Her parents were Edwin and Rose Cleaves of Queens, N.Y.
Susan was a member of the U.S. Air Force for 20 years and retired to Manchester, N.H., where she was employed for many years. Susan loved the Maine coast and spent many weeks each summer sailing on the schooner Heritage out of Rockland. The extended family would meet her at Lincolnville Beach at the Lobster Pound restaurant just before each voyage.
She moved to Maine to be near her family, living in Augusta until her death.
Susan will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her brother-in-law Stanley Eames of Gardiner; a niece Wendy Eames of Augusta; nephew Clayton Eames of Westbrook; grandniece Kristen Pietri of Sidney; her dear “sister” Phyllis Cudmore of Augusta; as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and the rest of her extended family.
There will be a gathering of family and friends at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta, from 2-4 p.m. on Friday, June 9.
