Steven DeMuro

Steven DeMuro, 53, of Bar Harbor passed away peacefully at his childhood home, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous 2½-year battle with intestinal cancer.

During these two and a half years, he was an inspiration to many other cancer patients, offering hope and a brave example to others facing the same journey.

Steven grew up in Bar Harbor and attended Conners-Emerson School and Mount Desert Island High School, where he played football, swam competitively (for his dad) and excelled in the high school chorus. Steven was a self-taught musician and entertainer who had a legion of fans from Maine to Florida. At age 41, he discovered a new love of carpentry, graduating from EMMC in 2009, with a degree in the building trade.

He will be sadly missed by his family: Mother, Roberta Douglass DeMuro, Father, Lenny DeMuro, Sister, Debby DeMuro Dubois (husband, Dan Dubois), Brother Tony DeMuro (wife, Milja Brecher-DeMuro), nieces Danielle Dubois and Ruby DeMuro and nephew Rex DeMuro and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

We would like to express thanks and appreciation to his many friends, the staff of Mount Desert Island Hospital and his advocate, Marion Higgins.

A memorial service celebrating his life will take place later in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Beth C. Wright Cancer Foundation at (207) 664-0339.

Know when to pay your respects.
