He was the husband of Judith Cousins (Freehafer), with whom he shared 56 years of marriage.
He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sept. 19, 1932. He graduated from Germantown Friends School and Harvard College. He then served in the Army, playing in the band, in Germany. He was an accomplished flutist and oboist.
He was CEO of Thermal Pipe Systems with headquarters in Wilmington, Del., and a manufacturing plant in Durant, Okla.
Sam loved Maine, where he had a vacation house, and enjoyed sailing and climbing on Mount Desert Island. He also loved hiking with his dogs (Shelties), studying birds and trees and reading, especially history.
He is survived by his children: Nathaniel and his wife, Sarah; Elizabeth and her husband, Brian Korrell; daughter Sarel, of Maryland; and Chandra and her husband, Keith Raymond, of Maine. He is also survived by two grandchildren: Virginia Korrell and Austin Raymond, and his sister, Elise Cousins.
He was predeceased by his brother Windsor Cousins, who died the day before Sam in State College, Pa.
The family will have a memorial gathering at Sam’s home in West Chester, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Brandywine Valley Association in West Chester, Pa.
