Sadie Frances Cunningham

Sadie Frances Cunningham, 91, of Bar Harbor passed away on Aug. 11, 2018, in Cape Elizabeth.

Sadie was born in Bar Harbor on Sept. 11, 1926, to Susan F. Lambert and George R. Lambert. She was a lifelong resident of Bar Harbor. On April 13, 1946, she married Ralph (Joe) Cunningham. Joe died in 1996, a few months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Sadie was well known in Bar Harbor. She worked for many years at the Connors Elementary School in the lunchroom and eventually as an assistant to the principal. She prided herself in knowing every child and in making sure that things ran smoothly. Sadie’s second career was as the owner of the Bar Harbor Gift Shop on Main Street. Many tourists came back year after year to see her. She was certainly well known for her ceramic creations. Her lighthouses were fast sellers as well as her gnomes.

Sadie was the matriarch of the family. She was devoted to her family and always put them first. She cared for her mother and father through illnesses as well as her husband, Joe, and her daughter, Dianne.

Sadie was a wonderful friend and was always willing to lend a helping hand no matter what the situation. And she never met a dog or cat that she didn’t love. Many a stray found a loving home with her.

She is survived by her son Mickey and his wife, Debbie, of Scarborough, granddaughters Kate Grey of Portland and Jenna Olietti (Phil) and great-grandchildren Hailey and Felix Olietti of Eugene, Ore., as well as several nieces and nephews. Sadie was predeceased by her husband, Joe, daughter Dianne, brothers Jimmy and George Lambert and sisters-in-law Barbara and Claire Lambert.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Cape Memory Care and Beacon Hospice for their care and compassion.

There will be a graveside service at Ledgelawn Cemetery on Sept. 1 at 2 p.m.

Friends and family wishing to honor Sadie’s memory may do so by donating to the Alzheimer’s Association, 383 U.S. Route 1, #2C, Scarborough, ME 04074.
