Richard W. Mason Sr.

OBIT-MasonDADE CITY, FLA. — Richard W. Mason Sr., 72 of Dade City, Fla., and a “regular” and well-known friend of many in the area, has “gone to heaven to be with Jesus,” as told from his best buddy and son, Jeff.

Richard left for his great journey on April 18, 2015, after suffering from an accident while doing what he loved to do, other than spending time with his family and friends.

He was born Feb. 13, 1943, in Ware, Mass., to Richard Alexander and Nellie Masaitis Mason. Richard did many things in his lifetime. Amongst the many things he did, he was especially proud that he was a chaplain, a firefighter, and over recent years, a fine and knowledgeable master gardener, to which he shared a landscaping business in Dade City.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, a great family man, and a great friend. Richard was also a strong advocate and friend to many folks at Downeast Horizons. There was never a dull moment when he was around helping with activities, serving on their board, or just visiting. Richard made a difference in this world to many people by helping, caring, loving and giving.

Those who were fortunate in knowing and having Richard in their lives were truly blessed by one very special, strong soul, whose faith in God never faltered, even when facing many ups and downs in his life. He loved with all of his heart, which you never second-guessed, especially when receiving the warm, strong greetings he always gave freely, and also his passionate signature statement of “God bless” when he bid farewell.

He is survived by his family of three children: Richard Mason Jr., Kelly Elliott, Jeffrey Mason; five grandchildren: Danielle, Karissa, Kateri, Dakota and Kaitlyn; and Andrea Mason, wife of 53 years. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Dalton. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him back.

A memorial service will be held in celebration of Richard’s life on May 12 at 6 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Church in Bar Harbor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Richard’s memory to: Downeast Horizons, 77 Union Street, Ellsworth, ME 04605, or to the USF Huntington’s Disease Research Fund, 12901 Bruce B. Downs Blvd, Tampa, FL 33612.

Know when to pay your respects.
