Reta C. Dunn

ELLSWORTH — Reta C. Dunn, 86, died peacefully in her sleep Oct. 12, 2015, at her residence. She was born in Mariaville, the only daughter of Avery W. and Olive B. (Rankin) Carr.

She was educated in Mariaville schools and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1947. She was proud to have had perfect attendance all four years. She found joy in keeping up with her classmates in recent years. She also attended Washington State Normal School in Machias.

In her early years, she worked at Clement Hardware Store, J.J. Newberry’s, and taught school for two years in Amherst and Mariaville. For the past 55 years she worked at H. W. Dunn & Son monument shop. She began working with Butler Dunn in 1960 and learned all aspects of the business from him except hand-lettering. When he passed away in 1986, she took over the business and continued until failing eyesight forced her to give up production, but she remained doing bookkeeping and office work, seldom missing a day, up to and including last week.

Reta was a 72-year member of Mariaville Grange #441, also the Maine State Grange and the National Grange. She recently recounted to fellow Grange members her memories of the building of the Mariaville Grange Hall in 1940 by her father and others. She was a member of the United Baptist Church of Ellsworth having served many years as deacon and financial secretary. She was a member of the Ellsworth Historical Society. Over the years she enjoyed many hobbies, but perhaps most of all collecting salt and pepper shakers and glass baskets.

She is survived by her only daughter Darlene Springer.

A graveside service will be held 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, at Brimmer Cemetery, Mariaville.

Reta was a generous person, delighting in supporting and giving gifts to various organizations, groups and churches. Instead of flowers, if you wish to contribute in her memory, your gifts may be sent to any of the above named groups or an organization of your choice.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth.
