Philip A. Chipman Jr.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Philip A. Chipman Jr., 63, died unexpectedly on Dec. 21, 2016. Phil was born Sept. 4, 1953, in Portland, Maine, to Betty and Philip Chipman Sr. He joined the Navy after graduating from MDI High School. He married Jill Sprague that same year. After a few years of traveling, they settled on Mount Desert Island, where he became a boat builder.

Phil could often be found working side jobs or on a friend’s car in the driveway. You could call Phil day or night and always count on him for a ride. Phil was also known for his lifelong devotion to the Patriots and Red Sox.

Phil enjoyed watching his granddaughter Mariah play sports, particularly basketball. He was involved in every aspect of her life from teaching her how to drive to helping collect bottles and cans this past summer so she could travel to Fiji after graduation this spring. He will be sadly missed in the bleachers at the MDI High School girls’ basketball games.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jill (Sprague) Chipman; daughter Michelle Chipman and son Kevin, both of Southwest Harbor; brother Mark and his wife, Stacy, of Southwest Harbor; sisters, Cheryl Dorr of Milbridge, Brenda and her husband, Robert Davis, of Florida, Debbie and her husband, Gary Alley, of Southwest Harbor, and Diane and her husband, Les Curtis, of Hermon; granddaughters Ivy Lynn (Hamor) Tracy and husband, Frank Tracy, of Sullivan,  and Mariah Hamor of Southwest Harbor; great-grandson Brayden Tracy of Sullivan; many nieces, nephews and “Uncle Bethany”; in-laws Debra and Larry Alley of Southwest Harbor, Roy Sprague and partner, Vange Dyer, of Lamoine; mother-in-law Louise Bond; and many friends he cared deeply for and who cared for him.

He was predeceased by his parents, Philip Sr. and Betty of Milbridge, father-in-law Roy Sprague, and brother-in-law and close friend Scott Sprague.

A service will be held at a later date in the spring.
