Paula Day Johnson

OBIT ISL-JohnsonORONO and SWANS ISLAND — Paula Day Johnson, 72, died Sept. 25, 2015, at a Boston hospital. She was born Oct. 27, 1942, in Caribou, daughter of Arthur E. and Phyllis M. (Day) Johnson.

Paula graduated from Caribou High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree and Master of Social Work degree from the University of Maine. Paula married Sue Estler, her partner of 25 years, on Dec. 29, 2012, the first day same-sex marriage was legal in Maine. They lived in Orono and on Swans Island.

Paula was a social worker with a passionate commitment to her clients with VISTA, Connecticut Family Services, Maine Child Protective Services and the Old Town Schools.

Paula is survived by her beloved wife, Sue Estler; her sisters Pamela Schreiber, Sandra Johnson, Karen Johnson, and Judi McKee and husband, Ken; generations of devoted nieces and nephews; and many loving friends. She also left behind her much-loved cats and dogs. Paula was predeceased by her parents and a special aunt, Evelyn Johnson.

A service and reception in celebration of Paula’s life will be held from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at Buchanan Alumni House, 160 College Ave., University of Maine, Orono. Interment service is planned for noon on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015, at Rose Hill Cemetery on Swans Island. Gifts in Paula’s memory may be sent to the Swans Island Ambulance Service, P.O.
