Mildred “Millie” Thornton Johnson, of Mount Desert, died at 87 on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, N.C.
Millie was born in Daytona Beach, Fla., on Nov. 5, 1934, to the late Burwell Thornton and Mildred Fentress Felton. After graduating high school, Millie went on to nursing school at Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing, MGH NAA, graduating as a registered nurse in 1956. Millie worked many years in nursing at the Mass General Hospital ER room and as an EMT for the town of Highlands, N.C.
Mildred was an avid tennis player on the USTA circuit, winning the West Palm Beach Open 1955, and was runner-up at the 1955 U.S. Women’s Indoor Championship in Brookline, Mass. Millie bought a century-old home on the Beech Hill Road, which she spent the rest of her life restoring. When she inherited the family home in Highlands, N.C., Millie, who tended to confound expectations, began to spend her summers down South and her winters Downeast.
While here in Mount Desert, she enjoyed breakfasting with her old tennis buddies Margery Stafford and Barbara Foster at Cozy Cove Café and walking with the Footloose Friends hiking group.
She is survived by her children Maynard Johnson and his wife, Susan, of San Diego, Calif., Lewis B. Johnson and his wife, Cindi, of Long Island, N.Y., and Shannon E. Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa.; and three grandchildren, Elise L. Johnson, Derek R. Johnson and his wife, Debra, and Chelsea V. Johnson.
In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by a sister, Marion Blackman.
