DEER ISLE – May B. Hamblen, 88, died peacefully at the Island Nursing Home on May 19, 2016. She was born on May 11, 1928, in Vinalhaven.
May was a devoted wife and mother. She was a great cook and an accomplished seamstress. She worked at many jobs over her lifetime, including sardine packing and lobster fishing. She loved her grandchildren very much and proudly displayed many photos in her living room. She had a great sense of humor and a generous heart. May and Jack were always willing to share what little they had with whomever stopped by to visit.
May is survived by her brother, Robert Burgess, and his wife, Colleen; her son, Jack Hamblen Jr. and his wife, Audrey; her daughter, Melinda Workman and her husband, Gordon; her adopted daughter, Barbette Haskell Leclair and her husband, Sonny; her grandchildren, Debbie Hamblen, Darleen Najera, Jack Hamblen, Andrea Workman and Renee Workman; her great-grandchildren, Nicholas Wood and Ava Najera. She had many nieces, nephews and family friends that held a special place in her heart.
Many thanks to those family members who spent time visiting with her at the nursing home and tried to make her life a bit brighter.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Hamblen Sr.; her parents, Carl and Addie (Martin) Burgess; her brother, Carl Burgess Jr.; and her sisters, Linda Betts and Katherine Larrabee.
A memorial service will be held at Bragdon Kelley Funeral Home in Stonington on June 18 at 9:30 a.m. A celebration of May’s life will be held immediately after at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church.
