Mary Christine “Tina” Hawes

BRUNSWICK

Mary Christine “Tina” Hawes, 72, of Brunswick, died June 14, 2017, at the Hospice House in Auburn. She was born Dec. 24, 1944, in Northbridge, Mass., daughter of Walter and Anna (Bombara) Budzyna.

After earning her degree at Clark University in Worcester, Mass., she traveled to Boulder, Colo. Tina was brought to Mount Desert Island as a behavioral researcher for the Jackson Laboratory. It was there that she met her future husband of 38 years, Norman, and set out on many adventures, beginning a life in Seal Harbor. Tina was very active in the school and in her children’s life. She worked hard to plan family camping trips touring through Canada or canoeing on Maine’s wilderness rivers. She brought creative energy and a cunning wit to all of her endeavors.

Tina was a woman of fierce independence and unwavering determination. Her love for books led her to work for several years with the community at the Northeast Harbor Library. Tina was a loving wife and mother, educator, caregiver and fighter. She approached each day with a smile on her face and a genuine passion to help others in need. It is this passion and strength that she modeled for those who knew her, to carry forward in their own way.

She is survived by her sons, David D. Hawes and his wife, Jill, of Mount Laurel, N.J., and Edward W. Hawes of Bar Harbor; her brother Ed and wife, Peggy, of Tallahassee, Fla.; her brother Jim and wife, Cathy, of Whitensville, Mass., and her grandchildren Emmaline, Noah, and Hannah. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Norman Lee Hawes. The family is planning a public memorial in celebration of Tina’s life in late summer. Interment will be in the William Hawes family lot at the Union Common Cemetery in Union. Contributions in Tina’s memory may be made to the Northeast Harbor Library at 1 Joy Road, Northeast Harbor, ME 04662. Arrangements by Affordable Cremation LLC, Auburn.
