Lloyd Vernon Sawyer

Bar Harbor and Trenton

Lloyd Vernon Sawyer, 94, entered into the eternal joy and peace of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 29, 2019. Lloyd was born Jan. 7, 1925, the 10th child of Fred and Ada (Jordan) Sawyer of Hulls Cove. His mother died when he was 4 and his father married again within a few years.

In his younger days, Lloyd and his brother Elliott (“Squeak”) took up boxing and earned extra money in matches at the Dreamwood Arena in Salisbury Cove. Lloyd also boxed in the Navy, winning flyweight tournaments. He served his country during World War II and the Korean War as an aviation machinist mate 3rd class petty officer. He was part of PBY Squadron VPB-2 along with his brother Ernest, and served on the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea, working on F4U Corsairs.

On Sept. 16, 1956, he married the love of his life, Dolores McFarland of Town Hill. They settled in Bar Harbor and enjoyed 60 years together before her death. Together, the two of them spent many eventful years raising three boys. Sports teams, school projects and camping trips were innumerable and unforgettable. One of the greatest joys of his life was serving the Lord as a member of the First Baptist Church of Bar Harbor.

For most of his working career Lloyd was employed by the Bluenose Ferry as an electrician and maintenance-man, as well as moonlighting as a handyman for local residents. In retirement, Lloyd and Dolores enjoyed traveling, camping and visits with their grandchildren. In their later years, they were lovingly cared for by their son, Thomas, at his home in Trenton. After Dolores died in 2017, Lloyd pushed ahead in life as best as he could, but always with the sure and certain hope that he would soon be reunited in heaven with Dolores and other loved ones who had preceded him. It is with gratitude, sadness and joy that Lloyd’s family celebrates with him today that he has, at last, achieved his life’s most important and noble goal, seeing Jesus and joining Dolores.

Lloyd was predeceased by his wife, parents, stepmother Leola (Robinson), brother-in-law Walt McFarland Jr., and he was the last survivor of his many brothers and sisters: Esther, Ella, Frederick, Leona, Lowell, Erland, Harrison, Elliott, Ernest, Gerard, Madeline and Burnell; half-siblings Ada and Charles; and step-siblings Mildred Caler and Leroy “Buddy” Caler.

Lloyd is survived by his sons: Wayne and his wife, Meg, of Tenants Harbor and their grown daughters Karis and Kristen; Thomas of Trenton; Bruce and his wife, Meg, of Shortsville, N.Y., and their son Nathan and daughter Brynnli. He is survived by two special sisters-in-law: Marion McFarland and Dolores “Dimp” Sawyer, and by numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19, 2019, at the First Baptist Church of Bar Harbor, 46 Ledgelawn Ave.; burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Baptist Youth Camp, P.O. Box 1214, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
