BASS HARBOR — Leslie Richard Phippen, 77, died peacefully in his sleep on Feb. 1, 2015, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. Known as “Dick” by friends and family, he had been in rehab for several weeks, following a stay at Eastern Maine Medical Center.
Dick was born on July 19, 1937, and grew up on Great Cranberry Island, Maine. After graduating from Pemetic High School, he joined the United States Air Force, where he served in Texas, Japan and Mississippi. Dick married his high school sweetheart, Gwendolyn Morrill, in 1957, and after being honorably discharged, they returned to Maine, settling in Bass Harbor and raising a family. Dick became a lobster fisherman, and spent the next 45 years doing the work he loved.
Dick is survived by daughter Jayne, son-in-law Joseph, sons Mickey, Donald and Patrick, and granddaughter, Jaynie Elizabeth. He was predeceased by beloved wife Gwendolyn, and daughter Deborah.
The family wishes to thank MDI Hospital, Eastern Maine Medical Center Intensive Care Unit, and the Maine Veteran’s Home in Bangor for their compassionate and skillful care over the course of Dick’s illness.
