Lawrence H. Bridges

York

Lawrence H. Bridges, 85, a resident of York and past resident of Southwest Harbor, passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, in Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth.

He was born Jan. 19, 1936, in York, a son of the late Charles D. and Helen (Shepherd) Bridges Sr. He attended York High School, lettering in all sports, and graduated in 1955.

Larry started his military career while in high school with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. After high school, he entered active duty in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division, which he was extremely proud to be a part of. Later he joined the U.S. Coast Guard, thinking it would give him more family time. Unfortunately, seasickness was no fun, and he later joined the U.S. Air Force, which proved to be a good fit.

Military life took him to many places in the USA and overseas. Four years in Alaska was a dream assignment and three years in Italy was as well. While stationed in Italy the whole family was able to visit all the sites in Europe. He also served tours in Vietnam and Pakistan. Larry finished his military service at 24 years.

A 30-year second career was that of an electrician for Acadia National Park, a rewarding and enjoyable job. Some of his hobbies were motocross racing, skiing, hockey and marathon running, with vacations his favorite. He loved riding his Harley all over Maine realizing what a truly beautiful state he was from.

He leaves his wife of 63 years, Sandra (Simonatis) Bridges; a son, Mark L. Bridges, of Irving, Texas; a daughter, Robin L. Bridges, of Hallowell; a brother, Charles D. Bridges Jr., and his wife, Candy, of York; a sister-in-law, Joan Howard, of Virginia; and several outstanding nieces and nephews. A brother, Richard S. Bridges, predeceased him. He also leaves his dog Molly and cantankerous parrot Higgins.

A graveside service with military honors for family and friends will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 10, in the First Parish Cemetery, York.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
