It is with great sadness the family of Katherine D. (Walls) Kmetetz announces her peaceful passing, surrounded by family on Friday, Nov. 12, 2021. Katherine was born at Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma, in 1959 and grew up traveling the Middle East, Africa and South America during the ’60s and ’70s while her parents worked for the U.S. government.
Kathy returned to the States her senior year and graduated from MDI High School. She met the love of her life, Marine Sgt. William Kmetetz Jr., while he was stationed in Jerusalem. They were married and raised their family in Fletcher, Vt. She home-schooled her children, was a Girl Scout leader, volunteered in the community writing grants to bring the arts and music into schools and shared her love for nature and biology with countless children in her town.
She was an accomplished beekeeper, Master Gardener, baker and quilter. She enjoyed camping with her family, reading, word puzzles, going to the movies and her aunt’s spaghetti. She recently fulfilled her dream of buying a farm with her husband of 40 years in North Yarmouth, where she planned to sell baked goods, fresh produce, honey and flowers. She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother (Mimi), sister and friend.
She is survived by her parents, Gerald and Jo Ann Walls, of Bass Harbor; her husband, William; son, Andrew Kmetetz, of North Yarmouth; son, Anthony Kmetetz, of Keizer, Oregon; daughter, Danielle, and husband, Kent Grimes, and grandchildren Julia and Quinn of Freeport. She is also survived by her sister, Teresa Grady, and husband, Steven, of Hopkinton, N.H., as well as many nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be held in the spring of 2022. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the ALS Foundation for Life.
