Karen “Jo Mama” Jopek, 71, passed away peacefully at her home on March 18, 2021. Karen “Jo Mama” embraced life and looked upon it as an adventure. She enjoyed traveling all over the East Coast for antique shows and fairs. After spending her early years in Florida, she and Max embarked on a new adventure and came to Maine in 1987 for a summer job. Together they fell in love with Bar Harbor and never looked back. She spent summers in Maine working at Testa’s, Duffy’s Quarterdeck and Maggie’s, ending her career at Jalapeño’s. Winters were spent in Florida, where she and Max restored and sold antiques. To say Karen “Jo Mama” was a character is an understatement. She was well known for her laugh, love of color and unique sense of style and humor.
Karen “Jo Mama” is survived by her best friend and loving husband of 52 years, Max Jopek of Bar Harbor, her sister Jackie Kemp Brown of North Carolina, her brother Richard A. “Jeff” Kurtz of Florida and her many friends who will miss her.
