Joyce A. (Smith) Carey

OBIT---Joyce-CareySURRY and BAR HARBOR — Joyce A. (Smith) Carey, 70, died peacefully at home in Bar Harbor on Nov. 24, 2014, after a hard fought battle with brain cancer. She was born May 31, 1944, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Lawrence M. and Bufford E. (Lane) Smith.

Joyce attended Northeast Harbor High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Bill Carey Sr., on Dec. 15, 1962, and started to build their family the same year.

Joyce and Bill purchased the former Carey’s Variety Store in Bar Harbor. They had their four children during the many years they operated the variety store together. In 1978, Joyce and Bill purchased the Mary Jane Restaurant, then in the early ’90s downsized to Tiffany’s Restaurant, both in Bar Harbor.

Joyce and Bill later worked at Atlantic Oaks, at Downeast Family YMCA and child care food program and most recently, Joyce, at Geddy’s Down Under.

She enjoyed family weekends at camp, where they lived on Toddy Pond. Every evening was celebrated with a 5 o’clock cocktail hour, either with a sunset cocktail cruise on the pontoon party boat or just drinks on the deck overlooking the pond and loons with family, friends and very special neighbors. In the winter, they enjoyed ice fishing together and the bonfires at camp were always a good time.

Joyce loved to garden and attended all the grandchildren’s sporting events that she could fit in. She enjoyed her weekly luncheon dates with her brother, Rodney and his wife, Sylvia, as well as her sleepovers with her very dear friend, Jeri Walls, reminiscing over old memories, where they laughed “till tears ran down their legs.” She loved her annual candy making with Liz as the holidays neared and our yearly Portland Christmas shopping trip with all the girls in the family, 35 years running. Joyce mostly enjoyed her family and our many excuses for gatherings and celebrations, be it birthdays, graduations, holidays, etc.

She was very happy to be able to ride out her illness in town, close to all her family and close friends so she could see us all often. Tammy’s house offered her many happy times with us and her daily, precious interactions with her great-granddaughter, Stella Boo, brought her immeasurable joy and laughter. She was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her second great-grandchild, Jayden.

Joyce is survived by her daughters, Annette Klaver and husband, Bill, Tammy Dow and husband, David and Cindy Walls and husband, Bruce; son, William Carey Jr. and husband, Dennis; her brother, Rodney Smith and wife, Sylvia; grandchildren, Jessica Dow Wiken and husband, Alex, Tiffany Dow, Molly Dow Young and husband, Ben, Dacota Dow and Mikhayla Winger, Katy, Andy, Elliott and Natalie Klaver, Whitney, Taylor and Ben Walls; great-granddaughter, Stella Marie Dow, along with countless other surrogate children and grandchildren, with special recognition to Paul Higgins and his family. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 50 years, William J. Carey Sr.; and by her siblings, Larry, Gloria, Johnny, Gwen and Kendrick.

Friends are invited to call, 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, where a celebration of life will be held, 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014.
