MOUNT DESERT – Joseph S. Gilliland, 77, died Dec. 5, 2016, in Bangor. He was born June 27, 1939, in Clifton Forge, Va., the son of Garland Y. and Carrie (Simpson) Gilliland.
Joe graduated with a BA from the University of Virginia. He served in the Air Force from 1962-1966, then worked as a reporter for the Roanoke Times.
Joe came to Maine and, after falling in love with the beautiful island and the village of Somesville, he and his family moved here. Joe spent time renovating the historic home they lived in and did a variety of odd jobs. He learned a lot about computers and eventually ended up teaching people to help keep them up to date with all the new programs. Joe worked as a cartoonist for a number of years as well. He did some substitute teaching at the elementary school and drew many pictures for the students. Joe was a volunteer with the Somesville Fire Department and served as chief until he had to step down because of severe arthritis in the spine. Joe and his family enjoyed several trips to Ireland.
Joe is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary E. (Evoy) Gilliland; son Frank “Charlie” Gilliland; two sisters, Peggy G. Jones and Loretta J. Gilliland; a special niece, Loreta G. Ferguson. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Garland Y. Gilliland Jr., and a very special brother-in-law, Darrell E. Jones.
Private services will be held in the spring.
Those who desire may make contributions in Joe’s memory to a charity of your choice.
