John Rooney

John Rooney, of Mount Desert Island, passed away on Feb. 6, 2018, after a brief illness. He was 63.

A native of Long Island, N.Y., John was the son of Dr. Thomas G. Rooney and Marjorie Rooney, of New Hyde Park. John graduated from Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., and upon graduation worked with Job Corps in Maine and Massachusetts, assisting teens and young adults living in poverty with finding a path to a successful career. Subsequent to Job Corps, John started an interior painting business based in Boston, before moving back to Maine to become a property manager.

A familiar figure on Mount Desert Island, John will be remembered for his legendary sense of humor, generosity and love of family and friends. John enjoyed hiking, kayaking, sailing, and biking, as well as movies and music. He also loved both collecting and creating art, and was an avid Red Sox fan. He especially cherished time spent with his nieces and nephew.

John is survived by his mother, his sister Eleanor Poppe, his brother Tom Rooney, his nephew Frank Poppe, his nieces Grace Poppe and Sarah Crilley, and Sarah’s husband, Bradley. John’s beloved cat of 12 years, Tiger, who prowled the woods of Mount Desert, passed away shortly before John, and countless birds may now relax.

A celebration of John’s life will be held on Mount Desert Island in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the SPCA of Hancock County.

Know when to pay your respects.
