John (Joe) Polchies Sr.

obit-polchies-islflagINDIAN ISLAND – John (Joe) Polchies Sr. passed away peacefully at his home, Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016, at 1:30 in the afternoon, surrounding by his loving family.

Born June 17, 1942, he grew up on Indian Island and then as a young man moved to Mount Desert Island, where he graduated from Bar Harbor High School in the Class of 1961.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam. Joe’s greatest joy was his wife of almost 50 years, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who referred to him affectionally as “Grampa Joe.” Joe also loved to play bingo with the love of his life, Patty.

He loved watching his children and grandchildren playing various sports and would yell affectionately at any event he was attending.

Throughout his life he managed various grocery stores in Maine and Alaska. Joe loved serving people and was well known for his sense of humor and manners.

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Gabriel and Helen Polchies; his sister Gail; and his son John J. Polchies Jr. Joe is survived by his loving wife, Patricia of Indian Island; his children; daughter Marie Polchies of Milton, Vt., daughter Debbie Meek and husband, Don, of Moyock, N.C.; son Gabe and wife, Jodi, of Gorham; daughter Amy Longfellow and husband, Chad, of Kenai, Alaska; son Jared Polchies of Indian Island. His loving  grandchildren, Melinda Lee, Josh and John Meek, Matt, Nick, Megan, Jake and Josh Polchies, Clayton and Sierra Longfellow and Trinity Polchies; great-grandchildren, Jaden, Maci, and Maverick Meek. Joe was blessed with an incredible person, Krissy Leavitt, who provided great care to him and support to the entire family.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:05 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. Reception immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations made to the American Diabetes Association, 45 Forest Ave., Portland, ME 04101.
