John Jerabek

obit john jerabekLAMOINE — A small family of deer stood outside John Jerabek’s window the day he died. In the last light, they lingered under the apple tree eating the frozen yellow fruit. As twilight fell they turned at last back into the dark woods behind the house in Lamoine that John shared with his wife, Elizabeth. She was John’s compass and safe harbor both, John her lode star and complete horizon, all 360 degrees around.

John developed his social conscience and street smarts in the 1960s on the upper west side of New York. His intellectual acumen was refined at Colby College and then at the University of Maine Law School. His character, however, was his own doing with morality and empathy embedded deep in his bones.

This man of great inner strength was an authentic soft-spoken gentleman. With his stepson Mike McMillen, those of us who knew him well will mourn and miss him beyond words. Those of you who did not know him will never know the gentle man you missed.

Know when to pay your respects.
