WALTHAM and SWANS ISLAND — John Edward Wheaton, 96, died Oct. 5, 2014, surrounded by his family at Maine Veterans Home, Bangor. He was born March 20, 1918, on Swans Island, the son of Burton E. and Georgia A. (White) Wheaton.
John was a lifelong resident of Swans Island and later in Waltham. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medic on the New Guinea. John was a very active community member and served on many boards and committees. He served on Swans Island as the town constable for a number of years, volunteered on the ambulance service, and was a member of the Swans Island Fisherman’s Co-Op and a past member of the Odd Fellows IOOF. John served as a lay leader of the Methodist Church for 35 years. He loved the Lord deeply and served him faithfully.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Lenora (Stanley) Wheaton; a son, Edward Wheaton and wife, Betty, of Pittston; a daughter, Helen Harriman and husband, Steve, of Waltham; brother, Robert Wheaton and wife, Barbara, of The Villages, Fla.; grandson, John E Wheaton II and wife, Deborah, of Ipswich, Mass. He was predeceased by two brothers, Nelson and Burton Wheaton; and sisters, Ethel Staples and Annie Wheaton.
