Joan Marie Laughlin Richardson, 84, died with all her family close by, on Jan. 15, 2018.
Born in Philadelphia in 1933, Joan lost her father unexpectedly during the Depression. Joan’s mother, Ester, raised her three children with the help of extended family. Several years later, Ester met and married Reginald Walls, from Mount Desert Island, who was working in Philadelphia during WWII. Eventually the family moved to Otter Creek, where Joan met her future husband, Roger Smith Richardson.
While Roger and Joan were raising their family in Otter Creek, Roger died unexpectedly in 1967. Joan then moved to Los Angeles, where her brother Thomas was helpful in setting up her new life with her children. She eventually returned to the East Coast, living briefly again in Philadelphia, Manhattan, and finally returning to Mount Desert Island in 2004.
Joan was a loving, resilient and brave person. She was devoted to all of her family and will be missed very much by her four children: Thomas Richardson, Scott Richardson, Brian Richardson and Rebecca Richardson; her grandchildren Kyle Richardson (spouse Nicole), Jamie Richardson, Matthew Richardson, Evan Richardson (spouse Caitlin) and Lindsay Richardson; her great-grandchildren Walker Richardson, Lila Richardson and Sophie Richardson; her daughters-in-law Brenda Richardson and Sandy Richardson; brother-in-law Paul Richardson; and nieces/nephews Paula Richardson Gannon, Gail Richardson Gee, Peter Richardson, Christopher Laughlin, Paul Laughlin and their families; and her brother Francis still resides in Philadelphia. She was predeceased by her loving brother Thomas.
Her cremated remains will be buried alongside her husband, Roger, in the Otter Creek Cemetery. A graveside service will be held in the spring.
