MANSET — Jennie Cline (66) died peacefully Monday morning, Feb. 8, 2016, surrounded by loving family and friends at her home in Manset. Presented with a cancer diagnosis three years ago, she responded with uncommon grace, courage, determination and vitality. She always had plans and was looking forward to the next project, trip or adventure. Throughout her life, Jennie gave generously of her time, energy, and passion to many community efforts and projects, particularly at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. In Southwest Harbor, she played a significant role in helping to establish the Common Good Soup Kitchen and created the first Little Free Library in town. She loved sharing her expertise, her creativity, and her curiosity about new things.
A professional graphic designer and computer specialist, Jennie was also a talented artist who loved learning new techniques and experimenting with a wide range of mediums. She was a crafter, a chef, a swimmer, a beachcomber, a letter-boxer, a gardener, a game player, a lover of full moons, and perhaps most of all, a community builder. She was an exceptionally thoughtful friend and a deeply loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Born Jennifer Claire Jordan on Aug. 31, 1949, she is the daughter of Dr. Valdemar M. Jordan and Frances Cobb Jordan of Cleveland Hts., Ohio, and Southwest Harbor. She is a graduate of the Hathaway Brown School and the College of Wooster. In 1973, Jennie married Andrew J. Cline, and together they have been blessed with two children, Heidi and Kevin, their spouses, and four grandchildren. Jennie first came to Maine with her family in the summer of 1961. She was instantly smitten with Mount Desert Island and particularly loved learning to sail here. In 1985, Jennie and Andy followed suit and built a summer home in Manset for their young family, while working at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., during the school year. Retirement in 2010 gave them an opportunity to make Southwest Harbor their year-round address.
Jennie and Andy’s daughter Heidi and husband Andy Wall live in Andover, Mass., with sons Henry (7) and Ellis (4). Their son Kevin and wife Michelle Warner live in Alameda, Calif., with daughter Finley-Ray (4) and son Theo (1). Jennie felt great devotion to these four little ones, who loved their Nana dearly. She is also survived by her sister Julie and brother-in-law Jim Drennan of Albuquerque, N.M.; her brother Alf and sister-in-law Ann Jordan of Yarmouth; and 12 nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jennie’s life is planned for the summer on a date to be determined. Condolences may be sent to the family in care of: Andy Cline, P.O. Box 1562, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679 or to [email protected].
