EXETER, N.H. — Janet Newman Cutliffe, 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Nov. 22, 2015, at Exeter Hospital after a brief illness. She was born on July 6, 1935, in Hamden, Conn., the daughter of the late Laurence and Eleanor (Jarvis) Newman.
Jan grew up in Southwest Harbor and was a 1953 graduate of Pemetic High School. In 1957, she graduated from the University of Maine-Orono with a bachelor’s degree and later received a certificate in education from Rivier College in Nashua, N.H.
A former longtime resident of Sandown, N.H., where she raised her family, she then moved around before settling at Forest Hills in Londonderry, N.H., and then to RiverWoods at Exeter two and a half years ago. Jan was always very involved in her community. She was a Girl Scout leader, member of the Sandown PTG (Parent Teachers Group), served as choir director at St. Matthew’s Church in Sandown, emcee of the annual Sandown Oktoberfest, and was a volunteer for the Lions Club, helping to raise funds with her annual comedy show performance. She was most recently a member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church.
A devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, her favorite place to be was with her family. She enjoyed many outdoor activities including camping, snowmobiling, gardening and landscaping. She was a wonderful cook, an avid card and board game player and loved to travel. Most recently, she was honored to have served as assistant chaperone on a trip to London, England, and Paris, France, with the Waterville High School Adelines, where her daughter, Carole, was director.
Jan is survived by three daughters, Carole Gilley of Waterville; Cynthia Ripley and her husband Tracy of Oakland; Linda Goddu and her husband Steven of Salem, N.H.; and her son Larry Cutliffe and his wife Beth of New Castle, N.H.; eight grandchildren, Matthew, Brandon, Justin, Taylor, Alicia, Andrew, Jessica, and Jennifer; three great-grandchildren, Julianna, Justin and Elsie; her twin brother, Jarvis Newman and his wife Susan of Southwest Harbor, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Laurence Newman and sister-in-law, Judy Newman.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 43 Pine St., Exeter, N.H. A reception will follow at The Ridge at RiverWoods, 10 White Oak Dr., Exeter, N.H. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, N.H., is assisting the family with the arrangements.
