James K. Potter, 64, of White Plains, N.Y., passed away on April 14, 2021. He was born on Dec. 29, 1956, in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Elizabeth (nee Ross) and Jacobus Potter.
He married his wife, Kathleen (Kathy, nee McHugh), in Edinburgh on Aug. 30, 2003. James first visited Mount Desert Island as a young child in 1959 and spent childhood vacations here with his family through the 1960s and 1970s, staying first in cabins on Echo Lake, then in Southwest Harbor. James continued to visit the island as an adult and introduced his wife to Acadia. He enjoyed seeing the sunrise from the top of Cadillac Mountain. James and Kathy also took several cruises to the Caribbean and to Bermuda, making new friends along the way.
James was a manager and dispatcher for Greenburgh Taxi in Greenburgh, N.Y., for 26 years, and was an avid traveler. He also enjoyed stamp collecting, bowling, fishing, cooking, barbecuing and jigsaw puzzles.
He is survived by his wife, his stepdaughter, Colleen Smith, of Hartsdale, N.Y., his granddaughter, Kayla A. Smith, and two sisters, Dorothy and Jane. His extended family includes several second-cousins in Winter Harbor and on MDI. James will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather, a beloved brother to his two sisters, and uncle to his three nephews.
James loved spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter Kayla. He often traveled back to Scotland and enjoyed family gatherings with his own father and with aunts, uncles and his many cousins. He will be missed for his kindness, his hard work, his devotion to family and friends, his generosity, his wit and his ability to outmaneuver his many opponents in Scrabble and Words with Friends.
