James “Howdy” Houghton passed over the bar Aug. 22, 2021. Born Dec. 27, 1947, Howdy attended Orono High and UMaine, Orono, before settling in Bar Harbor in 1969. He began lobstering in 1971, bought a scalloper in 1972 and continued scalloping and fish dragging from Bar Harbor to Cape Cod until 1992, becoming a well-respected and knowledgeable fisherman.
He then began at COA in maintenance and security, where he became part of the institution, much loved by the faculty and student body until his illness in 2020. Howdy’s interest in fisheries issues and ocean environment remained central to his life. Friends and dory mates are invited to a celebration of life on Earth Day, April 22, at 3 p.m. on the Bar Harbor town pier to share stories of his life.
