BAR HARBOR — Inez (Higgins) Kneeland, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed peacefully on May 13, 2017, surrounded by family, love and loving memories … all the things that she loved the most. She was the true matriarch of the family.
Mom was born on Feb. 23, 1932. She was the youngest of five daughters born to Lionel and Belle (Puffer) Higgins. Mom was a third generation of Higgins of Mount Desert Island. Her grandfather, William Puffer, helped to build the Cog Railway up Green Mountain (Cadillac).
Mom graduated from Lawrence High School, Fairfield, Maine. She loved being a majorette in high school.
She worked at the Jackson Laboratory for 18 years after working in animal care and later in research.
Mom had battled with breast cancer in 1985, lung cancer in 2010 and brain cancer in 2012. She was a brave and courageous lady who fought these battles with her family by her side.
Her hobbies included bowling, listening to country music, singing and dancing. She also enjoyed going to Bible study with a group of friends with meetings at different homes.
