Hilda Pomroy Merchant

obit-isl-merchantHALL QUARRY – Hilda Pomroy Merchant, born on July 12, 1925, in Seal Cove to Milton and Velma Pomroy passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, Dec. 5, 2016, at a Bar Harbor health care facility.

Her entire working life was spent packing sardines in the local sardine factory. She was runner-up as the fastest sardine packer in the World Championship Sardine Packing Contest held in Rockland by the Maine Sardine Council in the 1970s. She lived all her married life in her beloved Hall Quarry, where she was neighborhood mother to all the area children. Her door was always open and well stocked with “band aids.”

She is survived by her son John Merchant and his wife, Jeannie, of Mount Desert; daughter Hazel Young and her husband, Melvin, of Milbridge; six grandchildren, a special granddaughter Barbara M. Pettegrow and her husband, Corey, Mike Merchant and wife, Valerie, Hayley Merchant and her fiancé, Mac MacElwain, and Carl Butler Jr., all of Southwest Harbor, Justin Merchant of Round Mountain, Texas, and Christopher Butler and wife, Christina, of Palm Harbor, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, Chad Grass, Abbe Pettegrow, Natalie Butler, Brianna Butler, and Ava Merchant; brother Roger Pomroy and wife, Libby, of Seal Cove. She is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Howard “Bud” Merchant Jr.; brothers John and Alton Pomroy; and sisters Irene Pomroy, Cretia Pomroy, Leola Higgins, and Gaynell Sumner.

Services will be held at a later date.
