Helmut Weber, 85, passed away Jan. 3, 2020, at Woodlawn Rehabilitation and Living Center in Skowhegan. He was born Sept. 5, 1934, in Hamburg, Germany, the son of Fritz and Anna (Koerner) Weber. He immigrated to New York City in 1956, where he met the love of his life, Inge Charlotte Brimmekamp. He married her on Sept. 26, 1959.
He was employed from 1958 to 1975 at Volkswagen of America. In 1975, he moved his family to Witch Cliff in Bar Harbor and became the owner of Ellsworth Autohaus, and later Ellsworth Collision and Service Center. He and Inge also owned the Cadillac Motor Inn in Bar Harbor.
Helmut was a pillar of the MDI community, a man of honor, integrity and principle. He was a member of the Masons, Schlarafia, Rotary and Shriners. He loved traveling, art, following current events and hosting parties for friends. From 1982-1989, he was chairman of the board for the Mount Desert Island Hospital. He was also on the board of directors for several years at the MDI Biological Laboratory and was active with their Visiting Scientist Program. He loved sailing and was the commodore of the Bar Harbor Yacht Club for many years. As commodore, he oversaw the rebuilding of the club’s pier. Throughout his life, even through his last years as he struggled with frontal lobe dementia that resulted from a stroke, he earned the respect of those whose lives he touched.
Helmut is survived by his son, Dieter Weber, and wife, Linda Moran, of Hope; his daughter, Dorisann Wagner, and husband, John, of Fairfield; two grandsons, Alexander and Samuel; and three step-grandchildren, Gwenyvere, Fiona and Shea. Helmut was predeceased by his wife, Inge, his parents, Fritz and Anna, and his brother, Hans.
At Helmut’s request, there will be no funeral or visitation hours. A graveside service will be held in the spring of 2020 at the Ledgelawn Cemetery in Bar Harbor, with a reception to follow at the Bar Harbor Inn.
In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations in Helmut’s memory to the Inge C.B. Weber Memorial Scholarship at the Bar Harbor Garden Club, P.O. Box 652, Bar Harbor, ME 04609, or at BarHarborGardenClub.org.
