Gerald P. Allen, former resident and business owner of Bar Harbor, died May 5, 2019, at the age of 83 in Lakeland, Fla., surrounded by his family. Jerry was born in Millinocket on Aug. 31, 1935, to Chester and Mary Allen. He graduated from Stearns High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Suzanne (Carr) Allen, on Aug. 13, 1956. Jerry worked at the Great Northern Paper Co. and spent a short time on a Maine Maritime ship. He and Suzanne started a family and moved to Bar Harbor. Jerry worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for many years. In 1976, he and Suzanne bought a restaurant, The Seaview Family Restaurant. Jerry owned and operated The Seaview until he retired in 1995.
Jerry was an avid golfer and card player. He was club champion at Kebo Valley for many years and for a time had a scratch handicap. He was always ready for his championship cribbage games with his brother, Bill. Jerry also played pool, fast-pitch softball and basketball as a younger man, and would watch any sport anywhere as he got older. He will be missed by his family and friends, and will be remembered as a hardworking man with compassion for his neighbor and always ready to have a good laugh.
Jerry is survived by his four children: Scott Allen and wife, Pam, Carrie McKay and husband, Jim, Catherine Hathaway and Greg Hobbs, and Amy Sussman and husband, Jeff. He had nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers: Ron Allen and wife, Jayne, Bill Allen and wife, Naomi, and Ted Allen and wife, Helen, and second wife, Judy (Leon) Allen. Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Chester and Mary Allen, his wife, Suzanne (Carr) Allen, and two brothers, David Allen and Bob Allen.
A graveside service for the family is scheduled for June 29, 2019, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Tim Fleck officiating. The family of Jerry Allen invites family and friends to an open house at Kebo Valley Golf Club on June 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. Come and join the family as we celebrate the life of our Father, Grandfather, Husband, Brother and Friend, Jerry Allen.
