LOCUST GROVE, VA. – George Robert Emmott Jr., of Locust Grove, Va., died on Oct. 23, 2016, after an extended illness.
George “Bob” Emmott was born in Seekonk, Mass., on Aug. 2, 1928, and raised in Harrington and Southwest Harbor. He graduated from Pemetic High School in Southwest Harbor and served in the U.S. Navy submarine service from 1945-1947. Mr. Emmott was employed as a telecommunications officer with the Department of the Army in 1950, working in this capacity for 28 years. He married Margery Ann Benson in 1954. During the course of his career, he and his family resided in Virginia and overseas, in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa. He left the federal government in 1978 and during his retirement, enjoyed golf, painting, travel, and long walks with his family. After Margery’s death in 1989, he married Doris Jean Compton in 1990.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 35 years, Margery Ann Benson Emmott, of Seawall, and his beloved wife of 15 years Doris Jean Compton Emmott, of Tazwell, Va.; by his mother and father, Verna Madeline and George Robert Emmott Sr.; and by his sister and brother, Betty Lou Emmott Beaudry and Larry Phillip Emmott, all of Southwest Harbor.
He is survived by his son Robert George Emmott, of Waynesville, N.C.; his son Mark David Emmott, daughter-in-law Rebecca Clark Emmott, and their children Marcus, Luke and Jocelyn Emmott, all of Culpeper, Va.; as well as his grandson Kendall Emmott, of Centerville, Ohio. He is also survived by his stepson Charles Henry Litz, his wife, Nanette, and their children Alex and Morgan Litz; and by his stepdaughter Kim Litz Brann, her husband, Gregg, and their children Maggie, Katherine and John Brann.
Interment will be at the Culpeper National Cemetery, following a gathering of family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
