Gayle T. Kent

Swan’s Island and Bangor

Gayle Theolyn Kent, 83, passed away peacefully Jan. 29, 2021, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, with her sons by her side.

Gayle was born on March 31, 1937, on Swan’s Island, the daughter of Elliott and Mallye (Kent) Smith. She graduated from Pemetic High School, Class of 1954. Throughout her life she worked various jobs, including telephone operator and ticket agent for the Maine State Ferry Service, as well as waitressing and working at the general store on the island. In 1981, she was hired as a teacher’s aide at the Swan’s Island Elementary School, where she retired in 2006. She taught many students to read, as well as math. She was also known as “the pencil lady,” as she bought fancy pencils and sold them to students and taught them math by way of making change.

Gayle was an avid knitter, crocheter and enjoyed sewing. She made multiple quilts for her sons, as well as sweaters, hats, mittens, socks and baby clothes for her whole family. She also was an amazing cook.

Gayle is survived by her twin sons, Darrell Elliott of Winslow and Dwayne Lester of Springvale; her sister, Brenda McKenna of Livermore; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friends Dolores Roberts of Bangor, Joyce Burns Knight of Orland and Marion Stinson of Machias.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Lester; her sister, Barbara Matthews; a nephew, Wayne Lemoine; and a special friend, Wilfred Watson.

A funeral service will be held in late spring/early summer on Swan’s Island with the Rev. Dr. Tracy Reeves officiating. Donations in Gayle’s memory may be made to the Swan’s Island historical Society, Po Box 144, Swan’s Island, ME 04685.
